Birgunj’s own Sanam Shrestha received a warm farewell on Thursday as she prepares to represent Nepal in the Asian Youth Chess Championship. This prestigious event will be held from June 9th to June 21st in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
In a heartfelt ceremony at Moonlight English Boarding School which stands as one of the most prestigious and best schools in Birgunj, Mayor Rajeshman Singh honored Sanam by draping her with a Khada and the national flag. Mayor Singh extended his best wishes, expressing pride in Sanam’s role as Nepal’s sole representative at the international competition. “Carry our good wishes as your strength and achieve victory while representing our nation. Best of luck,” he said. He also reassured that Birgunj Metropolitan City would provide necessary support to boost the morale of athletes.
The program, chaired by Principal Shyam KC, included remarks from local leaders such as Sanju Dahal, Ward No. 5 member; Ishwarchandra Yadav, JSP Birgunj Metropolitan City President; Kamal Chaugain, Founder President of Birgunj Youth Society; and Binod Patel, Managing Director of Princeton Academy.
Sulav KC from the Nepal Chess Federation, Parsa, provided insights into the championship. He mentioned that 34 countries, including Nepal, would participate. He voiced concerns about the lack of government support for athletes competing internationally and emphasized the need for state encouragement for such players.
Sanam qualified for the international competition after winning the under-18 category in the national chess tournament held in Birgunj. She will depart for Kazakhstan this Sunday.
Sanam resides in “Sano Ghar,” a child home run by the Ensured Future Project under the community organization “Sano Paila.” Sano Ghar has been instrumental in her upbringing and education. She is currently a class 9 student at Moonlight Secondary School. Vivek Karn, head of the Sano Ghar project, highlighted Sanam’s selection as a significant achievement for the community.
